Other crown ethers, also known as macrocyclic ethers, are large-ring compounds containing multiple oxygen atoms. In their nomenclature, the total number of atoms in the ring is indicated before the word "crown," while the number of oxygen atoms is noted after the name. These compounds were accidentally discovered by Pedersen of DuPont in 1967, and it was found that they exhibit many unusual properties.
The toxicity of 18-crown-6: The oral lethal dose in rats is 300 mg/kg.
Used as a metal ion chelating agent; organic reagent, pharmaceutical intermediate; serves as a chelating reagent and phase transfer catalyst
